Pietro Perugino

Born: c.1450, Italy, Citta della Pieve   Died: 1525, Italy, Fontignano

Born Pietro Vannucci, named Perugino after the town of Perugia in which he worked. It is thought that he studied under Piero della Francesca (c. 1415-1492). For some time Perugino was considered the equal of Leonardo da Vinci, but by the end of his life his style had been surpassed by both da Vinci and Raphael. During his life, however, he met great success and managed two workshops simultaneously. He was charged with decorating the walls of the Sistine Chapel in 1480-82, and the National Gallery holds fragments of his altarpiece for the Charterhouse of Pavia.
