Augustus Edwin John

Born: 1878, UK, Wales, Tenby   Died: 1961, Fordingbridge

Painter and printmaker. Brother of the painter Gwen John (1876-1939). He studied at the Slade School of Art, 1894-98. Whilst still a student his personality dramatically changed, probably as a result of a head injury sustained in a diving accident in 1897. He later taught at Liverpool School of Art, 1901-04, and was a co-founder of Chelsea Art School. A bohemian figure, he was fascinated by Romany language and culture and adopted a nomadic lifestyle between 1911 and 1914. He was appointed an Official War Artist during the First World War. He worked mainly as a society portraitist but also painted small landscapes and figure compositions, the latter often depicting gypsies and family members. He wrote two autobiographical volumes - 'Chiaroscuro', 1952, and 'Finishing Touches', published posthumously in 1964
