Display artist/maker:

Vivant Alphonse Legros

Born: 1837, France, Dijon   Died: 1911, Watford

Painter and printmaker. Worked as a scene painter before moving to Paris in 1851 where he studied under Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran (1802-1897) and at the École de Beaux-Arts, the latter 1855-57. He enjoyed success at the Salon but, encouraged by Whistler, he settled in England in 1863. He taught at the South Kensington Schools, 1875-76, before being appointed Professor of the Slade School, 1876-93, where he greatly influenced etchers such as William Strang (1859-1921) and Charles Holroyd (1861-1917). He was a founder member of both the Society of Painter-Etchers, 1881, and of the Society of Medallists, 1885. He produced over 700 etchings during his career of varied subjects including portraits, churches and figures, the latter often including macabre studies of the French peasantry
