Robert Ashwin Maynard

Born: 1888, UK, England, London   Died: 1966

Painter, illustrator and publisher. Studied under Walter Richard Sickert (1860-1942) at Westminster and later exhibited with the London Group, 1914. In 1921 he started working for the Davies sisters of Gregynog, Newtown, who immediately sent him to the Central School of Arts and Crafts to study ceramics and other crafts, 1921-22. On his return to Wales he worked as Controller of the Gregynog Press until 1930 before founding the Raven Press with Walter Horace Bray. Whilst in Gregynog he also acted as an advisor and curator to the Davies sisters and produced wood engravings some of which were published by the press in 'Essays of Elia' and Gilbert Murray's translation of 'The Plays of Euripides', both 1931. After the Second World War he worked as a designer
