Stefan Mrozewski

Born: 1894, Poland, Czéstochowa   Died: 1975, Walnut Creek, USA

Painter, printmaker and illustrator. Studied briefly at the State School of Decorative Arts in Poznau, 1921, and at a private school in Krakow, c.1921, before attending the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw, 1923-25, where he learned wood engraving under Wladyslaw Skoczylas (1863-1934). He then worked in Paris, 1925-32, Amsterdam, 1933-35, where he worked on the blocks for Wolfram von Eschenbach's 'Parzival', and then London, 1935-37, with trips to the Gregynog Press in Wales. He spent most of the Second World War in occupied Poland and in 1951 emigrated to America living first in New York and then in California. He produced portraits, murals and stained glass but is best known for his imaginative wood engravings including a series of 101 illustrations to Dante's 'Divine Comedy' produced over a period of 32 years
