Raymond Ray-Jones

Born: 1886, UK, England, Lancashire, Ashton-under-Lyne   Died: 1942, Cornwall

Printmaker. Known as Raymond Jones until 1913. Son of a cabinetmaker. He studied at Heginbottom School of Art, Ashton, 1902-07, under Gerald Moira (1867-1959) and Frank Short (1857-1945) at the Royal College of Art, 1907-10, and at the Académie Julian in Paris, 1911. He then travelled to Italy and undertook a clerical post during the First World War for the Royal Horse Artillery. He was made an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1914 and Fellow in 1926. He exhibited widely during the 1920s and 30s and one of his best known etchings, 'Lamplight', was selected as the Collectors' Club's 1925 Presentation Plate. He principally worked as a portraitist but his drawings and etchings also include detailed architectural subjects. His son Tony Ray-Jones (1941-1972) became a photographer
