Leonardo da Vinci

Born: 1452, Italy, Tuscany, Vinci   Died: 1519, Amboise, France

Painter and inventor. Illegitimate son of a Florentine notary. He was a pupil of Andrea del Verrocchio (c.1435-1488) in Florence for whom he probably worked before moving to Milan around 1482. In Milan he was patronised by Duke Ludovico Sforza (1452-1508) and painted his 'Last Supper' in the refectory of Sta Maria delle Grazie. After the French invasion of Milan in 1499 he was based in Florence, 1500-1506, Milan again, 1506-13, and Rome, 1513-16, before moving to France on the invitation of King Francis I in 1516. He became a leading figure of the High Renaissance and painted the now famous works 'Mona Lisa', 'Virgin of the Rocks' and 'Lady with an Ermine'. He was also an inventor and worked as a military engineer for Cesare Borgia, 1502-03. His designs filled numerous sketchbooks and included flying machines, waterways and catapults
