Mortimer Luddington Menpes

Born: 1860, Australia, Port Adelaide   Died: 1938, Pangbourne, England

Painter, printmaker and writer. Studied at the Adelaide School of Design before moving with his family to England in 1875 where he studied at the South Kensington School of Design. He met Whistler in 1880, became his studio assistant and later wrote 'Whistler as I Knew Him', 1904. He travelled extensively including visits to Europe, Japan, India, China, Burma, Mexico and South Africa. Consequently many of his numerous etchings, over 500 known, describe the people, towns and landscapes he encompassed on his journeys. He also produced portraits with sitters including Cecil Rhodes (1853-1902) and Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923)
