Leon Underwood

Born: 1890, UK, England, London, Shepherds Bush   Died: 1975

Sculptor, painter, printmaker and writer. Son of a dealer in antiquities. He studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic of Art, 1907-10, and the Royal College of Art, 1910-13, before visiting Poland, 1914, and serving as a camouflage officer in the First World War. After the war he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1919-20. He then taught part-time at the Royal College of Art, 1920-23, but during this time had already established the Brook Green School in Hammersmith, 1921-25 and 1928-38, where students included Nora Unwin (1907-1982), Blair Hughes-Stanton (1902-1981) and Gertrude Hermes (1901-1983). He lived in America, 1925-28, from where he visited Mexico with the author Phillips Russell, 1927-28. In 1931 he founded and published the magazine 'Island' through which he espoused the use of imagination in art. He was also an expert on African Art writing three books on the subject
