Edwin la Dell

Born: 1914, UK, England, Coventry   Died: 1970

Painter, printmaker and illustrator. Son of a bookbinder. He studied at Sheffield School of Art, from 1930, the Royal College of Art, from 1935, and also attended James Fitton's (1899-1982) classes in lithography at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. He was associated with the Artists' International Association around 1940 and worked in the Camouflage Unit and as an Official War Artist during the Second World War. After the war he taught at Central, and, from 1948, at the Royal College of Art where he was appointed Head of the School of Engraving in 1950. He developed the College's lithography studio and invited well known artists to work there. In 1969 he was made an Associate of the Royal Academy. He specialised in colour lithography creating prints of British ceremonies, New York townscapes and of his garden at his home in Kent
