Heinz Koppel

Born: 1919, Germany, Berlin   Died: 1980, Cwmerfyn, Ceredigion

Painter. Grew up in Berlin and Prague. He moved to London in 1936 where he studied in an art school established by Martin Bloch (1883-1954). In 1940 he moved to Wales settling at Dowlais in the mid 1940s. Here he taught at the Merthyr Art Society, an art group associated with Cedric Morris's (1889-1982) Dowlais settlement. He later taught at Liverpool College of Art in the late 1960s. He was influenced by the painter Ernest Zobole (1927-1999) and was a member of the 56 Group Wales. He painted colourful, expressive portraits and landscapes. His wife, Pip Koppel, is a ceramicist and his son, Gideon Koppel, a film-maker
