Bernard Rice

Born: 1900, Austria, Innsbruck   Died: 1998

Printmaker, painter, sculptor and designer. Son of English stained glass designers working in Germany. Studied at Innsbruck, 1915-18, Westminster School of Art, 1919-20, and at the Royal Academy Schools, 1921-22. He then worked as a furniture designer at a craft school in Bosnia, 1922-26, before studying again in Britain at the Royal College of Art, 1926-27. After another year in Yugoslavia, 1927-28, he moved to Egypt where he taught at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Cairo, 1929-39. He returned to London teaching wood engraving at the Sir John Cass School of Art between 1949 and 1952. He was elected a member of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1952. He produced paintings, stained glass and sculptures but is best known for his woodcuts of townscapes in Eastern Europe
