Display artist/maker:

Ian Strang

Born: 1886, UK, England, London   Died: 1952, UK, England, Buckinghamshire, Wavendon

Draughtsman and printmaker. Son of Scottish painter and printmaker William Strang, RA (1859-1921). Strang studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, 1902-1906, and under Jean-Paul Laurens (1831-1921) at the Académie Julian, Paris, 1906-08. His studies also included travelling in Europe, including Belgium, Italy and Spain. He enlisted in 1914 and served at the Western Front 1915-18. During the WWII, the War Artists’ Advisory Committee purchased a number of his pencil drawings depicting bombed out sites in London, some of which are now held at the Imperial War Museum, London. His images are very detailed and precise, often topographical and architectural, and include many Southern European destinations. As a printmaker, he worked in drypoint early in his career to create tonal effects, but later concentrated on etching.
