Hippolyte Arnoux

Born: France   Active: 1860-1890

Photographer. Worked in Egypt being based in Port Said, c.1869-c.90, where he recorded the construction of the Suez Canal. He ran a studio there under the title 'Canal Photographer' but he also utilised a boat equipped with a darkroom. He sold his albumen prints to tourists, published some of his work in his 'Album du Canal' of 1869 and saw his prints exhibited at the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris. He briefly became a partner to C. and G. Langaki, circa 1880. He also travelled and recorded scenes in Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Jerusalem and Aden. In Egypt, other than his views of the canal, he photographed the pyramids, the Sphinx and produced oriental portraits of local people
