Malcolm Osborne

Born: 1880, UK, England, Somerset, Frome   Died: 1963, London

Printmaker. Son of a schoolmaster. Studied at the Merchant Venturers' Technical College in Bristol and then as a pupil of Sir Frank Short (1857-1945) at the South Kensington Schools, 1901-06. During the First World War he served in Palestine, France and Salonika. After the war he travelled in Europe with his friend Alfred Bentley (1879-1923) with whom he shared a studio for a time. In 1924 Osborne replaced Short as Professor of the Engraving School at the Royal College of Art. He was made a full member of the Royal Academy in 1926 and served as President of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, 1938-62. He produced just over 100 drypoints and etchings, mainly between 1904 and 1940, of portraits and landscapes
