Erich Lessing

Born: 1923, Austria, Vienna   Died: 2018

Photographer. Son of a dentist and a concert pianist. He was forced to emigrate to Palestine in 1939, his mother died in Auschwitz. Served in the Second World War as an aviator and photographer for the British Army. He returned to Vienna in 1947 where he now lives. He was elected a full member of 'Magnum' in 1954 and worked as a photojournalist publishing in 'Life', 'Picture Post' and 'Paris-Match'. He has published over forty books and was awarded the Prix Nadar in 1966 for his book 'Die Odyssee'. He has established the huge 'Culture and Fine Arts Archive' from his own large format colour photography
