Christopher David Williams

Born: 1873, UK, Wales, Glamorgan, Maesteg   Died: 1934, London, Kensington

Painter. After attending Oswestry High School he studied at the Royal College of Art, 1893-96, and the Royal Academy, 1896-99, being taught at the latter by John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) and Sir George Clausen (1852-1944). He exhibited works at the Royal Academy in 1902 and 1903 before travelling with his new wife, Emily Appleyard, to Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Morocco in 1904. He established a reputation as a painter of portraits, allegorical scenes and, to a lesser extent, of landscapes. In 1911 he was commissioned to paint the Investiture of the Prince of Wales at Caernarfon which involved a trip to Buckingham Palace to finish the portraits. His other major paintings include the war scene 'Charge of the Welsh Division at Mametz Wood', 1916, commissioned by Lloyd George, and three subjects from the 'Mabinogion' - 'Ceridwen', 1910, 'Branwen', 1915, and 'Blodeuwedd', 1930. Between 1925 and 1932 he served as a member of the Art Committee of the National Museum of Wales. He had two sons - Ivor (1908-1982), also a painter, and Gwyn (1905-?), an astronomer
