Jean-Antoine Théodore Gudin

Born: 1802, France, Paris   Died: 1880, Boulogne-sur-Seine

Painter and printmaker. Pupil of Anne-Louis Girodet (1767-1824) and Antoine-Jean Gros (1771-1835) at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Working in Paris, he became a successful marine painter known particularly for his battle scenes, the latter including 97 works recording the history of the French Navy for the Palace of Versailles. He also received commissions from Nicholas I of Russia. He was awarded a baronetcy by Louis-Philippe. As a friend of Sir David Wilkie (1785-1841) he spent some of his later years in Scotland
