Sir Hubert von Herkomer

Born: 1849, Germany, Bavaria, Landsberg, Waal   Died: 1914, Budleigh Salterton

Painter, designer and illustrator. Son of a German wood-carver. Moved with his family to England, via America, in 1857. Studied at Southampton School of Art, c.1863-64, Munich Academy and the South Kensington Art School, 1866. He then worked mainly as an illustrator seeing his drawings published in the 'Graphic', the 'Illustrated London News', 'London Society' and the 'Cornhill Magazine'. He founded his own art school at Bushey, Hertfordshire, in 1883 and later held the post of Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford between 1885 and 1894. He painted social realist scenes but principally worked as a portraitist after 1880 with sitters including John Ruskin (1819-1900), Robert Baden-Powell (1857-1941) and Horatio Herbert Kitchener (1850-1916). He also produced theatre designs, acted and composed music
