Wilhelm Kümpel

Born: 1822, Germany, Altona   Died: 1880

Painter and musician. Studied at the Düsseldorf Academy, 1843-c.1848. Some of his early work was collected by King Christian VIII of Denmark. He settled in England where he worked as a portraitist and landscape painter being best known for his landscapes of West Hampshire. He was heavily involved in the New Forest Exhibition of 1876 and campaigned for the Forest's preservation. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1857 and 1879 and also saw some of his work published in the 'Illustrated London News'. He was a friend of George Powell of Nanteos. A collection of his letters is held in the National Library of Wales
