Sir John Lavery

Born: 1856, UK, Northern Ireland, Belfast   Died: 1941, Kilkenny, Ireland

Painter. He began as a photographer's assistant in Glasgow before studying at the city's Haldane Academy, 1870s, briefly in London and then at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1881. He then returned to Glasgow, where he was associated with the Glasgow Boys, 1885-96. There after he settled in London though he often spent his winters at a second home in Morocco. He principally worked as a society portraitist, particularly of women, but also painted landscapes, interiors and state and parliamentary scenes. During the First World War he worked as an Official War Artist. His autobiography, 'The Life of a Painter', was published in 1940
