James Stark

Born: 1794, UK, England, Norwich   Died: 1859, London

Painter. Son of a Scottish dyer, father of painter Arthur James Stark (1831-1902). Stark was apprenticed to Norwich school artist John Crome (1768-1821) for three years in 1811. In order to study figure drawing, he moved to London in 1814 and enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools in 1817. The British Institution awarded him a premium for his painting ‘Lambeth, Looking towards Westminster Bridge’ in 1818. An illness forced him to move back to Norwich in 1821 where he experimented with etching the same year. He also produced 36 engravings from 1827 onwards; they were published in a single volume as ‘Scenery of the rivers of Norfolk, compromising the Yare, the Waveney, and the Bure. From pictures painted by James Stark, with historical and geological descriptions by J. W. Robberds, jun. esq.’ in 1834. Stark had started exhibiting with the Norwich Society of Arts and became their vice-president 1828 and 1829 and president in 1830. He continued exhibiting with them until 1832 although he and his family moved back to London in 1830. He specialised in landscape paintings influenced by the Norwich school and Dutch artists such as Meindert Hobbema (1638-1709). Later works became lighter and were inspired e.g. by the royal park at Windsor. He showed his works regularly, among others, at the Royal Academy (1811-59), the Royal Watercolour Society (1817-19) and the British Institution (1814-59).
