James Barry

Born: 1741, Ireland, Cork   Died: 1806, London

Painter. Studied under John Butts (c.1728-1765) in Cork and under Jacob Ennis (1728-1770) in Dublin before moving to London in 1764. He was an acquaintance of Edmund Burke (1729-1797) who financially assisted Barry's European tour between 1765 and 1771. He was appointed Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy in 1782, a post he held till 1799 when he was suspended. He was influenced by Renaissance artists and was an adherent of Reynolds's 'Grand Manner'. He painted many self portraits and historical subjects
