Display artist/maker:

Pierre Joseph Antoine

Born: 1840, Belgium, Herstal   Died: 1913, Brussels, Schaerbeek

Painter. Antoine began his career by making engravings of coats of arms before studying at the Academy of Liege under the painters Auguste Chauvin (1810-1884) and Jean-Mathieu Nisen (1819-1885). The award of a Darchis grant allowed him to travel and work in Rome, from 1868, and he later lived for approximately seven years in Florence. He also worked as a portraitist in London, c.1878 to c.1890, where his work was favoured by the aristocracy. He then returned to Liege where he was appointed President of the Society of Fine Arts in 1895. He spent his latter years in his son's home at Schaerbeek, Brussels. He produced a variety of work in a realist style including oils of historical and religious subjects and a series of murals in the church of Saint-Veronique in Liege. However, he is best known today for his full-length portraits, interiors and genre scenes in watercolour
