Trevor Bates

Born: 1921, UK, England, London   Died: 2008, Canada

Sculptor. Grandson of the sculptor Harry Bates (1850-1899). Trevor Bates served as an RAF pilot throughout the Second World War and was awarded with the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1947-50, before attending the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris, 1950. Whilst in Paris he also studied in the studio of the Russian sculptor Ossip Zadkine (1890-1967) and through him met the modernist sculptors Giacometti and Brancusi. On his return to Britain he taught at Newport College of Art, c.1954-1960, and became a founder member of the 56 Group Wales. He then taught as Head of Sculpture at Hornsey College of Art, 1960-67, before moving permanently to New Brunswick, Canada, to continue his teaching. His work in bronze was typically modernist and based around figures, birds and animals. Drawing was always an important element of his creative output
