Shoji Hamada

Born: 1894, Japan, Kanagawa   Died: 1978, Tochiji

Ceramicist. Studied ceramics at Tokyo Technical College, 1913-16. In 1918 he met Bernard Leach and worked with him the following year at Leach's studio at Abiko. They then both moved to England in 1920 where Hamada initially researched slipware at the British Museum before moving to Cornwall to help Leach establish his pottery in St Ives. He returned to Japan in 1924 but continued to travel widely and undertook numerous demonstration tours in America during the 1950s and 60s. His work was acknowledged by honorary doctorates from Michigan University and Kings College, London and in Japan by being the first to be awarded a 'National Living Treasure'.
