Giovanni Lanfranco

Born: 1582, Italy, Parma   Died: 1647, Rome

Painter. Pupil of Agostino Carracci (1557-1602) in Parma and of Annibale Carracci (1560-1609) in Rome, the latter from 1602. He established his reputation in Rome where he was employed in the decoration of St Peter's between circa 1628 and 1631. He worked in Naples between 1633 and 1646 before returning to Rome. He painted frescoes in numerous churches, often using a sotto in sù effect, including the domes of both the S. Andrea della Valle, Rome, 1625-27, and of the S Gennaro chapel in Naples Cathedral, 1641-43. He was regarded as one of the founders of the High Baroque style and he was a life-long rival of Domenichino (1581-1641)
