Sir Edward John Poynter

Born: 1836, France, Paris   Died: 1919, London

Painter, designer and curator. Son of an architect and watercolourist. Studied briefly with Thomas Shotter Boys, 1852, before visiting Rome, 1853-54. He then studied with William Dobson and at the Royal Academy Schools before entering Charles Gleyre's studio in Paris, the latter 1856-59. In 1871 he was appointed Slade Professor at University College, London. He was the last artist to hold the post of Director of the National Gallery, 1894-1904. He painted classical and Egyptian subjects but also produced portraits, landscapes, stained glass designs, interior decorations, illustrations and medallions
