Simeon Solomon

Born: 1840, UK, England, London   Died: 1905, London

Painter. Brother of Abraham Solomon (1823-1863) and Rebecca Solomon (1832-1886). Studied at F.S. Cary's Academy, 1852-56, and the Royal Academy Schools. Influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, he produced detailed paintings of Jewish life as well as religious and mythological subjects. He also made designs for William Morris's business in 1863 and produced a few etchings. He travelled to Italy three times between 1866 and 1870. He was arrested for attempted sodomy in a urinal in Stratford Place Mews, London in 1873. After a six week detainment in Clerkenwell House of Detention his career and mental health collapsed, although he continued to produce and sell work, supported by loyal family and friends. He died in St Giles Workhouse in Holborn, London, at the age of 65.
