Émile-Jean-Horace Vernet

Born: 1789, France, Paris, Louvre   Died: 1863, Paris

Painter. Known as 'Horace Vernet'. Taught by his father, Carle Vernet (1758-1836), and by François-André Vincent (1746-1814), the latter until 1810. He exhibited in the Salon from 1812 but was controversially rejected in 1822. He was appointed Director of the French Academy in Rome, 1828-35, before becoming a professor in the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He travelled widely including visits to the Middle East, 1839-40, Russia, 1836 and 1842-43, Crimea, 1854-55 and numerous trips to Algeria. He painted a variety of subjects but is best known for his large scale battle scenes in the Palace of Versailles
