Richard Westall

Born: 1765, UK, England, Hertford   Died: 1836, London

Painter and illustrator. Elder brother of the topographical artist William Westall (1781-1850). Served an apprenticeship with a heraldic engraver, 1779, before entering the Royal Academy Schools. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1784 and 1836 being elected an RA in 1794. In 1827 he was appointed as Queen Victoria's first drawing master. He produced numerous neo-classical scenes of mythological subjects, often commissioned by his patrons Richard Payne Knight (1750-1824) and Thomas Hope (c.1770-1831). He also painted portraits and was widely known through his work as an illustrator, the latter including scenes from Shakespeare
