James Wilson Whittaker

Born: 1828, UK, England, Manchester   Died: 1876, River Llugwy

Painter. Served an apprenticeship with an engraver to calico printers before moving to Betws-y-Coed in North Wales, circa 1857, where he painted picturesque landscapes, mainly in watercolour. He became an associate member of the Old Watercolour Society in 1862 and a full member in 1864. He travelled to Italy in 1864. An alcoholic, he died in an accident, drowned after slipping from a rocky gorge into the River Llugwy in North Wales
