Hans Burgkmair

Born: 1473, Germany, Augsburg   Died: 1531, Augsburg

Painter and designer of woodcuts. Known as Hans Burgkmair the Elder. Taught first by his father Thoman Burgkmair (1444-1523) and then by Martin Schongauer (d.1491) in Colmar, 1488-90. He worked in Augsburg from 1498 and probably visited Italy in 1507. He served in the court of Emperor Maximilian (1459-1519) for whom he contributed illustrations to his romantic stories 'Teuerdank' and 'Weisskunig' and, around 1518, produced a suite of 92 large woodcuts representing the life of the Emperor. The latter woodcuts were not published until the end of the eighteenth century. His son, Hans Burgkmair the Younger (c.1500-1559), was an engraver and painter
