George Minne

Born: 1866, Belgium, Ghent   Died: 1941

Sculptor, painter and illustrator. Son of an architect. Studied at the Ghent Academy and later in Brussels and in France. He was influenced by the Symbolist poet Maurice Maeterlink (1862-1949) for whom he illustrated 'Serres Chaudes' in 1889. He joined the 'Les Vingt' group of artists in 1891. From 1898 he lived in Laethem-Saint-Martin - except during the First World War when he moved to Llanidloes, Mid-Wales as a refugee - where a number of Symbolist artists were living. He sculpted figurines, particularly kneeling adolescents, in bronze and stone. His 'Fountain of the Kneeling Youths', c.1898, is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Ghent
