Antoine-Charles-Horace Vernet

Born: 1758, France, Bordeaux   Died: 1836, Paris

Painter and printmaker. Known as 'Carle Vernet'. Son of Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714-1789) and father of Émile-Jean-Horace Vernet (1789-1863). Taught by his father, his work was quickly recognised and in 1782 he won the Prix-de-Rome. He painted battle scenes, now in the Palace of Versailles, for Napoleon who awarded him a Legion of Honour in 1808. After the Restoration he became Official Painter to Louis XVIII (1755-1824). A keen horseman, his equine drawings were published as lithographs and engravings. Besides his military depictions he painted genre scenes, hunt scenes and racing pictures
