James Boswell

Born: 1906, New Zealand   Died: 1971, London

Painter, printmaker and political cartoonist. Moved to London in 1925 where he worked as a graphic designer before studying lithography under James Fitton at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in 1933. He was a founder member of the Artists' International Association and produced expressionist inspired lithographs of urban life including his 1933 series 'The Fall of London' which depict an imaginative communist uprising in the capital. He also published cartoons in the 'Left Review'. His later work includes semi-abstract landscapes of Iraq. A collection of his work was donated to the Tate Gallery by his widow
