Fred Uhlman

Born: 1901, Germany, Stuttgart   Died: 1985, UK, England, London

Painter and writer. Son of a Jewish textile merchant. Uhlmann studied and practiced law in Germany before fleeing to Paris from the Nazi regime in 1933. Encouraged by artist and art critic André Lôthe (1985-1962) and Paul Westheim (1886-1963), a German art historian, he began his career as a painter, creating colourful images in a naïve style. In 1936 after having lived in Spain until the outbreak of the Civil War, he emigrated to the UK and started assisting Jewish refugees from Germany including artists such as John Heartfield (1891-1968). He co-founded the Freier Deutscher Kulturbund, an artistic association of refugees in Britain, in 1938. During his internment on the Isle of Man in 1940, he met Dadaist Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948) who portrayed him. He continued his career as a painter in Britain and internationally; his landscape images were particularly inspired by North Wales. Furthermore, he wrote his autobiography, the Making of an Englishman (1960), and various novels, including the acclaimed Reunion (1971), which Harold Pinter turned into a movie in 1989.
