Nathaniel Hone

Born: 1718, Ireland, Dublin   Died: 1784, London

Painter, portraitist. Son of a merchant. After travelling in Italy between 1750 and 1752 he settled permanently in London where he worked as a miniaturist. He was a founder member of the Royal Academy but rejected Joshua Reynolds's classical style of portraiture prefering a more relaxed style inspired by Dutch art. His 1775 painting 'The Conjuror', in which a bearded figure magically creates new paintings from old master prints, was rejected by the Royal Academy as it was perceived to satirize Joshua Reynolds and Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807). His brother Samuel (b.1726) and sons Horace (1754-1825) and Camillus (1759-1836) were also painters
