Andrew Vicari

Born: 1938, UK, Wales, Port Talbot

Painter. Italian background. Studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1951-53, under William Coldstream and Lucian Freud. At the Slade his work was admired by Francis Bacon who became a mentor for Vicari. His vibrant, figurative works have proved popular with dignitaries in China, Russia and Saudi Arabia. He has been appointed official painter to Interpol, the French Motorcycle Police and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. For the latter he painted 'The Triumph of the Bedouin' and received £17.6 million pounds for the series 'From War to Peace in the Gulf: The Liberation of Kuwait' making him the highest earning artist in Britain. He has also been honoured as the first Western artist to be invited to paint a portrait of Confucius
