Katharine Pleydell-Bouverie

Born: 1895, UK, England, Berkshire, Coleshill   Died: 1985

Ceramicist. Her family called her Bina and her fellow potters, Beano. She served in the Red Cross during the First World War before studying at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, 1921-24, and then as a pupil at the Leach Pottery, St Ives, 1924. In 1925 she and Ada (Peter) Mason established the Cole Pottery at her parents family estate in Coleshill, Berkshire. After Mason left in 1927, Pleydell-Bouverie was joined by Norah Braden the following year and the two worked closely until 1936 producing simple, modest vases with ash glazes. Production at the pottery ceased during the Second World War and when her family sold the estate in 1946 she moved to Kilmington Manor in Wiltshire. She also wrote two novels and poetry during the 1920s. Being of independent means she was able to sell her work at modest prices and was committed to keeping it accessible to a wide audience
