Display artist/maker:

Emile Decoeur

Born: 1876, France   Died: 1953

Ceramicist. An orphan, he served an apprenticeship under the potter Edmond Lachenal (1855-1930) at Châtillon, Paris, 1889-1902, before working as a master potter at the Sèvres Factory. His early work was in the decorative experimental traditions of French Art Nouveau. In 1907 he established his own Paris studio at Fontenay-aux-Roses and abandoned ornamental decoration in favour of refined shapes and sophisticated glazes. Along with Raoul Lachenal (1885-1956), Eugene Grasset (1845-1917) and others he co-founded 'The Societe des Artistes Decorateurs' and exhibited regularly in Paris and at the 1925 World Fair. He again worked for Sèvres acting as artistic adviser between 1939 and 1948. He produced stoneware and porcelain, including Chinese shaped ware, and, after 1927, experimented with kaolin mixed glazes
