Display artist/maker:

Ernest Chaplet

Born: 1835, France, Paris   Died: 1909

Ceramicist. Trained at Sèvres before working at the commercial factories of Laurin and Haviland in Limoges where in 1871-72 he developed the underglaze slip method 'barbotine'. He later established a studio in Paris where he maintained connections with the avant garde including collaborations with Paul Gauguin in 1886. From 1885 he experimented with thick-bodied forms and flambé glazes but he was also interested in the grand traditions of European ceramics, in folk pottery and in oriental wares. He was very protective of his knowledge and experiments and in 1887, when he signed over his studio to Auguste Delaherche (1857-1940), he burnt all his notes. In his last years he was blind. He is regarded as one of the earliest studio potters
