Display artist/maker:

Royal Doulton

   Active: 1815-

Originally operating in Vauxhall, London and later moving to Lambeth, in 1882 it opened a factory in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. The firm originally specialised in sanitary stoneware but from the 1870s formed a link with the Lambeth School of Art to create a fruitful development in various forms of art pottery.

By the 1890s Royal Doulton employed over three hundred artists, of whom George Tinworth was one of the best known. In 1914, Charles Noke became the art director and he continued the tradition by creating new kinds of decorative wares promoting modern forms and experimenting with glaze effects as can be seen in the Chang pottery in this collection.
