William Salter Mycock

Born: 1872, UK, England, Staffordshire, Handford   Died: 1950

Ceramicist and painter. Initially worked in the painters' shop of Wedgwood & Sons Ltd. before working with various Staffordshire potteries as a jobbing artist. By 1894 he was working as a tile artist for Pilkington's Tile & Pottery Co. Ltd. transferring to the factory's pottery department in 1906 where he designed and painted Royal Lancastrian lustre ware. His lustre decorations typically included heraldic, floral, bird and ship designs. His later work for Pilkington's included sgraffito and incised designs. He retired when the business closed in 1938. He also painted watercolours, was greatly interested in the writings of John Ruskin and served as an alderman for Salford City Council during the 1930s. A collection of his design sketches is held in the archives of Swinton and Pendlebury Public Library
