Irene Mary Browne

Born: 1881   Died: 1977   Active: 1906-1943

Sculptor and ceramicist. Studied in a number of institutions in the London area including Croydon School of Art, Westminster Technical Institute and, between 1906 and 1911, modelling under Charles Hartwell at Chelsea Polytechnic. During her training she obtained a number of commendations and prizes for her drawings and figures. She produced plaster and bronze figures, mainly female, and portraits and first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1908. She took up pottery in 1919, which she learned at the Putney School of Art. Within the year she was successfully producing earthenware statuettes that were fired at the Fulham Pottery and in 1927 she bought her own electric kiln. She was elected a Member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers in 1929 and of the Society of Women Artists in 1930
