Display artist/maker:

Peter Starkey

Born: 1945, UK

Ceramicist. Starkey was an early pioneer of the contemporary studio ceramics movement to work with salt-glazed stoneware. He established a pottery at Hunworth, Norfolk in 1973, and in 1975 set up the Dartington Pottery Training Workshop which produced high quality functional ware.

As a child Starkey was fascinated with making fires and often got into trouble for doing so. He trained at Portsmouth School of Art (1963-65), followed by teacher training at Cardiff, and Harrow (1971-73), where his fellow students included Walter Keeler and Colin Pearson.

The process of firing clay is still very much an obsession for Starkey, especially combined with the unpredictable nature of using salt. He has said that after unpacking a kiln after firing, he has a terrific urge to fill it up again.

Starkey taught Ceramics at the School of Art & Design, University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, until 2003. He currently has a workshop in Hertfordshire and lectures at South Glamorgan institute of Education.
