David Cox

Born: 1783, UK, England, Birmingham   Died: 1859, Harborne

Painter. Son of a blacksmith. He was first apprenticed to a miniaturist before working as a theatre painter in Birmingham and London. In London he attended classes by the landscape artist John Varley (1778-1842) and became a teacher himself specialising in sketching holidays within Britain, particularly to Wales which he visited almost annually between 1805 and 1856. He published drawing manuals and treatises on landscape painting and was elected President of the Associated Artists in Water Colour in 1810. After an early period in London he lived in Hereford, 1814-27, London again, 1829-41, and Harborne, near Birmingham, 1841-59. He painted landscapes in oil and watercolour, the latter often on wrapping paper which was later made commercially as 'Cox Paper'
