Mollie Winterburn

Born: 1920, UK, England, Yorkshire   Died: 1996

Ceramicist and painter. In the 1950s, determined to become a potter, Winterburn dug her own clay and fired her pots in a bonfire with the help of the children at the school where she was teaching PE. She eventually become a teacher and lecturer in ceramics and worked in south east London.

Winterburn wrote two books, ‘Handbuilt Pottery’ (1967) and ‘Techniques in Handbuilding’ (1969). In 1979 she moved to mid-Wales where she had her own workshop. She was a long-standing member of the Craft Potters Association.

Winterburn worked in handbuilt stoneware, shaping the vessels into organic, asymmetrical forms decorated with simple designs emphasising the structure.
