Alexander Gabriel Decamps

Born: 1803, France, Paris   Died: 1860, Fontainebleau

Painter and printmaker. Brother of the art critic Maurice Alexandre Decamps (1804-1852). Trained under Etienne Bouhot (1780-1862), 1816-18. Spent a period of his early life in Orsay, Picardy. He won medals from the Paris Salon in 1831 and 1834. In 1828 he toured Turkey and parts of North Africa and he visited Italy in 1935. He painted religious works, animals, genre scenes and landscapes but was chiefly known as an Orientalist. He also produced etchings and lithographs, the latter including satirical works published in the Paris magazine 'La Caricature'
