On the way up Holly Hill, Hampstead (PR1598) by Frederick Charles Richards - Aberystwyth University School of Art Museums and Galleries

Fifth (final) state. The original drawing was published in 'Hampstead: Being Eight Sketches in Pencil with some Letterpress', published an an edition of 10,000 in 1916. Richards was commissioned for this booklet / sketchbook by Frank Pick, Head of the Design Department at London Transport, so as to advertise the Underground. The proceeds of the sales were donated in aid of wounded soldiers in Hampstead. The etching was made from the drawing a year later in 1917? This final state was exhibited at the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers in 1917

Street scene, Holly Hill, Hampstead; foreground, ground (unworked); middleground, two baskets on the floor and two women with a baby girl the dress of the latter being playfully tugged by a dog; background, bushes, a chimney stack, railings, a lamp and arches in a railway embankment (London Underground) with gates and a grocers / fruit shop selling grapes?, bananas? and apples? Etched in a narrow, tentative line with parallel lines and some cross hatching. Stopping out used for a shadow cast across the gates on the right. Large areas left unworked. Text on image, on advertisement / poster on the gate of the shop, 'THEATR[E]'
